At Blue Horse Truck Driver Training, we specialise in helping students take the next step in their driving career with our Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver Training. A HR licence allows you to drive vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8,000kg and tow a trailer up to 9,000kg GVM, making it one of the most versatile and in-demand licences in the transport industry. HR training is offered across three transmissions:

  • HR-A (Automatic) – Holders of HR-A licence can only operate a HR vehicle with an automatic gearbox.
  • HR-B (Synchromesh): A HR-B Licence entitles the holder to drive HR vehicles with automatic and synchromesh gear boxes.
  • HR (Road Ranger/Open): The unrestricted licence allows the driver to operate any HR vehicle with automatic, synchromesh, and crash box (double clutch) transmissions.

Course outline

  • This course provides the skills and knowledge required to drive a heavy rigid vehicle, offering safe driving techniques, including systematic and efficient control of all vehicle functions, monitoring of traffic and road conditions, managing vehicle condition and performance, and effectively managing hazardous situations.
  • Self-paced online theory assessment, which is to be completed before the practical component of the course commences.
  • 1-day one-on-one Practical (on-road) driving training/ assessment
  • Training with experienced, accredited trainer/assessor
  • On road assessment conducted on-site by our DoT approved assessors

Eligibility to complete the course

  • A valid WA C-class licence for at least 2 years or a Medium Rigid (MR)/ Light Medium(LR) for at least 1 year.
    Interstate or international licence holders must transfer their licence to WA before sitting their assessment (PDA).
  • DoT required eye test –minimum requirement must be met for anyone wanting to drive a commercial vehicle. If you wear glasses or contact lenses while driving, you must be tested wearing these.
  • If you have any medical condition, restriction, or disability that may affect your training, i.e. hearing impairment, dyslexia, or an injury to your arm or leg—please disclose this information before confirming your booking. In some instances, the matter may need to be referred to the Department of Transport (DoT) for approval.
